And while we can't all be the next Serena Williams, there's on aspect of being a top tennis player that everyone can aspire to - great bone health. Here's how...
Why should I be concerned about my bone health?
You might think that bone health is something you don't have to worry about until you get older. And it's true that our bones do get weaker after we go through the menopause.
Your bones reach their strongest when you're in your 30s and their strength gradually declines after that. But if they're strong to begin with, they'll take much longer to weaken.
So if you've got into good bone health habits, your chances of developing bone diseases like osteoporosis in later life are significantly reduced. Around half of all UK women over 50 will suffer a fracture caused by osteoporosis - it's a worryingly common disorder.
How can I keep my bones healthy?
Here's the good news - it's easy to slip into good bone health habits.
· Start with your exercise routine. Make sure you include both weight-bearing exercise and resistance exercise. Weight-bearing exercise just means exercise where your legs and feet support your own weight, such as dancing, running, tennis, football, walking or skipping, while resistance exercise is exercise that uses the strength of your muscles, like lifting weights.
· Now take a look at your diet. You'll probably have heard that you need plenty of calcium for healthy bones. If you're eating a healthy, varied and balanced diet, you're unlikely to need calcium supplements. Try to get outside in the sun for short periods during the summer to increase your body's production of vitamin D, which helps you absorb calcium. (For more information on vitamin D, take a look at last month's features).
· Finally, think about your lifestyle. Two of the simplest ways of improving your bone health are stopping smoking and cutting down on alcohol - and these will benefit your well-being in so many other ways, too.
Kinjal from RYVITA® says: "Wow, I never realised that osteoporosis is so common. I'm going to try and eat more of a balanced diet from now on, and certainly cut down on the wine! Are you doing anything special to keep your bones healthy? If so, why not share it with us?"
